The practice group at Fasken is well-placed to advise on a wide range of telecoms and broadcasting matters. Particular areas of expertise include advising telecoms service providers, radio and television programming providers, satellite television distributors and satellite service providers on network deployment requirements, anti-spam legislation and specialized communications contracts. In addition, the team regularly acts for clients before the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission, the Department of Innovation and the Copyright Board. Ottawa-based Leslie Milton heads up the group and specializes in regulatory telecoms matters; she has niche expertise in assisting service providers with access to municipal rights of way.   • Advised Rogers Communications on the CRTC’s ongoing review of its wireline wholesale high-speed access framework.
  • Advised multiple broadcasting companies such as Rogers and Sirius XM with respect to their implementation of the requirements imposed by the Accessible Canada Act and the associated regulations issued by the CRTC and the Governor in Council.
  • Advised Rogers Communications on implementation of Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, and the various new regulatory frameworks the CRTC will seek to adopt for television, radio, distribution and online streaming services.

The practice group at McCarthy Tétrault is frequently called upon by telecoms companies, satellite carriers, mobile and fixed wireless networks, cable operators, financial institution, regulators and government entities for its telecoms and broadcasting knowledge. The application, regulation and commercialization of emerging technologies, as well as related litigation, are particular areas of expertise for the team. Counsel Grant Buchanan directs the national department and specializes in broadcasting and telecoms regulatory matters and financing. Also noted are Steven Mason (IP litigation); Brandon Kain (telecoms disputes); and Keith Rose (telecoms regulatory work). Associate Marissa Caldwell‘s broad practice takes in technology commercialization, IP, privacy and broadcasting and telecoms mandates.
