At Exchange Chambers ‘there is a breadth of expertise across all levels of call in insolvency and company work’, and this encompasses asset tracing and recovery, bankruptcy, administration, shareholder disputes, and director disqualification. The set is home to Giles Maynard-Connor KC, head of the insolvency practice, and he often provides non-contentious advice to office holders and companies. Richard Tetlow‘s insolvency practice encompasses both corporate and personal litigation, as does Carly Sandbach‘s, and she is particularly skilled at handling directors’ disqualification proceedings and public interest winding up petitions. Sandbach acted for the Secretary of State in directors’ disqualification proceedings against two financial advisors following a pension mis-selling scheme. Ian Tucker has a particular interest in cases where insolvency and land law converge, and he has appeared before the Court of Appeal. Tucker represented the trustee in Khan v Singh-Sall & Ano, which concerned an application to annul a bankruptcy order on the grounds that it should not have been made in the first place. George Rowell is another key junior here with experience in insolvency cases that have related tax elements.

Kings Chambers


Praised as ‘the pre-eminent set in Manchester for valuable company litigation’, Kings Chambers is home to Lesley Anderson KC, who has appeared several times before the Supreme Court, and David Casement KC, who successfully represented the respondents in Brown v Graham, a shareholder dispute surrounding allegations of unfairly prejudicial conduct arising from the termination of a director. Louis Doyle KC is a specialist personal and corporate insolvency silk, while Mark Harper KC and Andrew Grantham KC are both strong in shareholder disputes. Martin Budworth and Ben Harding are notable juniors in this area; Budworth acted for the plaintiff in Durose v Waterland & ors, a £25m unfair prejudice petition arising from allegations that Dutch private equity investors unlawfully flooded the board and subsequently diluted the shareholding.

Head of chambers Richard Chapman KC is a key member of the business and property team at 18 St John Street Chambers, and he successfully acted for the defendants in Arieli v Shalom and others, which concerned a claim for breach of trust in relation to share dividends. The set is also home to Jennifer Newstead-Taylor, who handles a broad range of insolvency law mandates, and Oliver Caplan, who is often called upon to handle director and partnership disputes, as well as banking and insolvency matters. Elisabeth Tythcott was instructed by the claimant in Clements v Frisby, a £100m claim for breach of confidence, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract arising from allegations that the defendant used the claimant’s business plan, corporate identity, and seed capital in order to launch their own fashion label.
